Meta (owner of Facebook, Instagram & WhatsApp) is joining the fediverse very soon and have to seriously prepare. This isn’t a theoretical scenario anymore.
“One of Meta’s top executives showed employees a preview of the company’s upcoming Twitter competitor during a companywide meeting today” via https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/8/23754304/instagram-meta-twitter-competitor-threads-activitypub
The photo shows what seems to be a fake conversation with @tonyg with the full @mastodon.social handle visible in two places.
@zeitverschreib @awl @fediverse @fediversereport @tonyg @liaizon Has that really worked out? I mean, mastodon is still here… although they instance blocked instances that were around before them.

Where’s “here?”

@zeitverschreib @fediverse @fediversereport @tonyg @awl @liaizon Here is the fediverse which uses activitypub to connect between servers/instances.
I’d say that they are likely to remain around making bad decisions which has caused problems for instances using other software. Imagine that this has been a problem with how mastodon treated GNU/Social instances, and that was just one guy as the developer. Imagine how much worse this will get with a large corporation fucking things up and causing overloads because of the scale of it. That’s if they aren’t scared off or want to do their own thing like Gab did.
