It has some real “I used to support the left until they called me racist so I became a right-wing racist” energy. If all it took was someone being a meanie for you to completely alter your worldview, you weren’t leftwing in the first place.
Or it could be the alternative. “I was a lefty and when the right dunked on me they looked sooooooooo cool! So I joined them so I can be part of the internet popular kids!”
