The Japanese term is oidashibeya if anyone is wondering. In English they are also called “banishment rooms”, “chasing-out-rooms”, or “boredom rooms”, it would seem. I remember there was actually an Aggretsuko story arc where the pig guy was put in such a room, which was referred to as the “career experience design department”. It makes me wonder how common oidashibeya really are in Japan, because with their presence in both factual news and fictional stories alike, it would certainly seem like oidashibeya are a big problem. It’s basically psychological torture through boredom and degradation because the company doesn’t want to pay for benefits, right? Mega fucked.
