I’ve been contributing to Google Maps for a while, specifically, I usually upload pictures of menu’s from restaurants, so future visitors can see them before they decide to eat there! I’m trying to degoogle my life a bit & was wondering if there is a way I could contribute these to OSM?
If the menu is available on a website you can link to it by adding the
website:menu
tag. These will show on Organic Maps for examplehttps://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key%3Awebsite%3Amenu
See for example this bar that Organic Maps shows the link to the Menu:
Mate Bar https://omaps.app/0ysrTcXR-t/Mate_Bar om://0ysrTcXR-t/Mate_Bar
I’ve added ‘image:menu’ and ‘website:menu’ to https://mapcomplete.org/food . With it, you can now upload an image of the menu with a few clicks.
@pietervdvn: cool, did not know that page. Where is it uploading to?
The images to imgur are backed up in case they get deleted from imgur for whatever reason btw.
And soon :tm: they’ll be uploaded to an open source image hosting system but I still need to get that online
Images are uoloaded to imgur. Not perfect, but it just works and is reliable.
All other data gets (generally) uploaded to OSM, except for reviews which go to mangrove.reviews
And there is some Wikipedia/Wikidata in the mix for some other pages too, but that is clearly attributed
In my experience website menus aren’t incredibly common, perhaps I could upload the photo and link that though.
That’s really neat! Thanks
I’ve also wondered this. I’d also like to contribute info on how busy places generally are around me, so you know to show up early if you want a table, or don’t bother dining in on a weekend, etc.
Apparently MapComplete integrated mangrove.reviews, and you can upload pictures from MapComplete, so that may be the best option for now?
There’s also https://lib.reviews/ which is Creative Commons licensed. Looks like there’s open issues to integrate that into OSM via a plugin: https://github.com/eloquence/lib.reviews/issues/319
Map complete looks great ~ but there doesn’t seem to be an Android app for it. It would be neat if organic maps could integrate with mangrove.reviews.
You can install it as progressive web app (basically a glorified bookmark on your home page, opening full screen giving an ‘app’-experience).
I might package it as Android app one day, but that is something that’ll take some time (and hopefully funding from NlNet).
This is what I’ve done! Expect some reviews on mangrove from me soon :)
For photos, Wikimedia Commons seems like the best approach, although really any website will do (as long as there are no licensing issues w/ that site and OSM). There is a whole wiki page about linking OSM features to photos.
Unsure about reviews, though.
Not specifically for restaurant menus, but more generally if you’d like to contribute to Open Street Map while out and about, depending on your area there may not be complete information for a lot of businesses. You can use an app like Go Map!! on iOS or Street Complete on Android (or many other OSM apps) to add information like business hours, website, phone number, and other useful information.
I already use StreetComplete ;)
Every Door is another app for updating hours and contact info for businesses while out and about. It’s available for both iOS and Android.
@ApplyingAutomation You can use https://mapcomplete.org/food for this - it has reviews (thanks to @mangroveReviews ) and picture upload
How is the connection between OpenStreetMap POIs and Mangrove Reviews? How does a map user find the reviews for a specific POI?
I was checking out https://mangrove.reviews and it seems that it is using Name+GeoCoordinates to identify an POI.
@redd Basically that. In @MapComplete , I’m simply querying nearby reviews and seeing that the name is somewhat similar.
This means that is a shop changes name, they lose their reviews.
Wikipedia page maybe?
