Oh my God. I just watched Comrades: Almost A Love Story for the first time and it’s just such a beautiful and cute and sad film. It completely blew me away, I came in not expecting anything. I feel like just crying about it forever.
Recent film? Indie film?
Not even, it came out in 1996* so I was way behind. It’s really interesting to watch it now though with the retrospective of knowing what waits for the characters in the political economies of the 2000’s and on.
It was released by Golden Harvest so I don’t think that counts as an indie in Hong Kong. I think it had a major production and wide release but I could be wrong.
Really recommend it! Subtle critique of capitalist politics in Hong Kong and the alienation of immigrant identities, among other things, but it’s mainly a romantic comedy.
Fascinating, just by reading this. I’ll check it out.
Let me know what you think!
I watched it on Criterion Channel if you have access to that but you can easily torrent.
Understood!
