The only metroidvanias I’ve really enjoyed in the last decade have been Celeste, Ori and Momodora: Reverie under the Moonlight.

Everything else has been extremely mid, and it’s pretty difficult to look at Celeste and Ori and see them purely as metroidvanias when their primary things is mainly the platforming.

I think every person who likes metroidvanias maybe has like, 2-4 at most that they actually seriously liked from the big metroidvania glut of the past however many years. Hollow Knight and Metroid Dread are the only ones I’ve gone back and replayed after my first runthroughs, so those are the good-good ones to me.

I did not like Hollow Knight unfortunately. Something just does not click for me with it. I can tell it’s a well made game but ehhhh it just fails to keep my attention.

The momodora dev did a 3d one after reverie and that was kinda mid too. They’re going back to 2d with their new game though so I’m kinda hopeful it will be good.
