    Memorized openings only get you so far, and even then there are branches and deviations. There’s a reason why repeat games are so rare.

    Chess engines generally aren’t very good at evaluating openings, while high-level human players can memorize the theory for a large number of openings (and engines can have them hard-coded). The reason engines are so much better than humans is the rest of the game.
