I mean, more people like our dearly-beloved Adrian Zenz, and other “whistleblowers” who consistently change their story on China and NK. I’d like to memorize their names. If there’s already such a post, I apologize for the re-ask.

Darren Byler: He received his PhD from the Department of Anthropology at the University of Washington in 2018. He is also a post-Doctoral Fellow at the Center for Asian Studies, University of Colorado Boulder. Currently an assistant prof at SFU School for International Studies. Less widely known is that he worked at the Wilson Center’s Kissinger Institute on China and the United States from March 1, 2020 — March 31, 2021.

Adam Hunerven: Is the pen name of the previously listed Darren Byler. There is practically no trace of this person on the internet besides his essay called “Spirit Breaking” which coincidentally is also the name of Byler’s 2018 doctoral thesis from UW.

Chuang CN: They are a “leftist” blog that highlights “freedom fighters” in China who rebel against its “capitalist” system. Chaung CN is the site that Byler used to launder “Adam Hunerven’s” writing. The issue with “Spirit Breaking” is hardly subjective it simply carefully repackages Falun Gong and Zenz claims but drapes the whole thing in lefty terminology.

Lausan HK: Much like Chuang they are a “leftist” organization that writes about China. One of their main contributors used to be Wilfred Chan, who now writes for The Nation. Chan’s background includes Whitehouse intern in 2012, CNN International in 2014 (specifically covering Hong Kong) and Dissent Magazine in 2019.

David Brophy: Senior Lecturer in Modern Chinese History at the University of Sydney, this man uses Byler’s pen name Adam Hunerven as a source in his articles published in the Made In China Journal.

Eli Friedman: Another “leftist” China scholar. He completed his PhD in sociology at the University of California, Berkeley and currently teaches at Cornell as an Assistant Professor of International and Comparative Labor. He’s quite good at propping himself up as a leftist as his work has been published numerous time on Jacobin.

I highly recommend following @rodericday on twitter as he is quite good digging up these threads and it’s through his tweets that I was able to map this together.
