Coming January 25
So excited to see Capcom hasn’t forgotten about these games. Really hoping they release an Ace Attorney Investigations duology in the future…
I feel like there’s two main issues with it:
- It was sold on the DS, so they’re pressured to do total upscaling of all the sprites and backgrounds. I imagine that’s a lot of work, though they might be used to it now from all the recent ports.
- AAI2 has an unofficial translation they’re ranking against. There’s legal issues with using someone else’s translation, but there’s also a lot of fan love for the translation naming choices the unofficial translation used (eg, Sebastian DeBeste). It may become very confusing having three names for one character - Japanese, fan English, and official English.
Neither of those are issues:
- Both Investigations games had HD mobile ports that already had redrawn/upscaled visuals. They look really good.
- They would need to translate AAI2, but localizing a previously fan translated game is not unprecedented, they did it with GAA.
GAA made sense to leave names as they were, as the story was very explicit about who was Japanese or not. But AAI2 would likely be using invented names to fit with the current localization theme - “Phoenix Wright”, not “Naruhodo Ryuichi”. If they use a name like Simon Keyes, it would infringe on fan copyrights, and if they don’t, they miss on most awareness of that character and a clever naming opportunity. That’s what I mean about a translation naming issue.
AAI2 needs to be released outside of Japan. The last case is my favorite in the franchise (that I have played). I did not see the plot twist coming.
Another rerelease, so I can safely skip it. Capcom keeps remastering and releasing the games over and over. How many versions of the original trilogy are there? 4 or 5? GBA, DS, Wii, Mobile and PC, and Switch? At least they are not adding new cases (except on the first GBA to DS port).
It is nice that Dual Destinies and Spirits of Justice might get an English language physical release via this compilation.
Well, as someone who didn’t had any previous Nintendo console, and doesn’t play on mobile and PC, I fully support these releases. I am playing the original trilogy these days, and loving it. Without these releases, I would’ve been able to experience these games.
But it would be better if they were not just porting over the game engine and upscaling/redrawing existing assets but also producing new games in it.
I am quite sure they are porting these games to increase or renew the interest in the series, before they release a new game.
Capcom has been pretty good with this stuff lately. Like remaking all RE games, but still making new RE games too. So, I am hopeful about the new games, but yeah, if they don’t announce anything new by next year then I would be with you. Though, since you have already played all the old ones, I understand your frustration with it. In your position I would probably feel the same.
