I had mixed emotions when I first read this, like how can you take so long to update a phone? But then I did realise that most Android manufacturers supports a phone only 2 or 3 years for security patches and updates (Apple of course sets the example here for 7+ years).
So yes actually it is something to boast about, being able to use an Android phone for 5+ years and still be assured of security patches and updates from Google. It makes the investment more worthwhile.
Now if only batteries lasted longer or could be replaced!!!

I’m very happy about this, had a fairphone 2 for 4-5 years now and its still doing alright. they’ve upgraded from I think android 5 to 6 to 7 in that time but hit a speed bump when android stopped supporting the chip in it so they had to hire a team of programmers to get android 9 working.
and the batteries, along with alot else in the fairphone 2, are replaceable, the batteries tend to last about 2 years before they need replacing. I’m trying to keep mine going till fairphone 4 is out.
I think I may go for lineage os at some point in the future though because google are evil.
My Fairphone 2 is now 3 and a half years old and I have no issues with the battery so far but I need a new bottom module every six to twelve month and those won’t be sold anymore from next month on. I bought one ahead but I guess at some point the bottom module will be the reason why I have to buy a new phone. :/
yea I sorta forget that I’ve had alot of trouble with bottom modules too, thanks for the heads up about them
The update to Android 9 solved a lot of software issues and I bought a magnetic connector and hope it makes the module last longer.
sadly I think all the bottom modules are sold out in the uk store, think ill have to check if mines in warranty. looking forward to when android 9 gets pushed out to me :)
Micro usb sucks. Get yourself something like this
That’s probably a really good idea. Thanks!
Got it, love it, hope it makes the module last longer. Thanks for the tip.
Things like this is why I use LineageOS
It’s not a viable option for everyone. It’s really important to give upgrades to every user, even not tech savvy ones. I’m really happy for what Fairphone manage to give to his users
