I woke up today and came home to my dad freaking out. Apparently, cox has given us a warning because of a pirated copy of Sims 4. I have utorrent so I’m going to unintall that. Do I have to uninstall the Sims 4 as well? I don’t think they can specifically tell. But I will uninstall utorrent. What should I do going forward. What do you think set it off?
How likely is legal action to be taken? I didn’t get a letter, only a text notification that there might be possible piracy, and of course, they scared my dad on the phone. It seemed like a warning and nothing legal.
Edit: I had a VPN, just not a good one. It went down when downloading, apparently. Any recommendations would be helpful. I was using the free version of Proton VPN and encountered no issues previously.
Edit 2: I got Mullvad. Hopefully, that’ll work out. Thanks, everyone, for your help and kindness. I actually expected more of a brutal lecturing from reddit, but you’ve all been really nice, and it’s appreciated.
Edit 3: Free proton servers don’t proxy bitorrent traffic. Lesson learned, don’t cheap out on a VPN. Cough up a couple of bucks now save money on free games and shows in the future. Also, the utorrent sucks.
Edit 4: Yes, Sims 4 is free. Repacks offer DLC. To get all DLC, you’d need to spend over $1,000.
