    I’ve lost patience with this. I know the clerk is just following their employer’s instructions, but again that doesn’t put the burden on me to deal with all of that.

    My script is to smile and respond “just the items, please” to anything not related to payment. I don’t have to consider what they are offering, I don’t have to acknowledge it, I don’t have to show that I understand it, I don’t have to let it into my head.

    Store: Do you also need a pack of kitchen words words words?

    Me: :) Just the items, please.

    Store: Our membership is 30% off today and words words words.

    Me: :) Just the items, please.

    Store: The total is thirty-two fifty.

    Me: Here you go. Have a nice day.
