The adventure starts at the fringes of society.

It is the story of rural life in Paris with a wanderer who’s also a thinker. Indeed special case. It makes its way through the highs and lows of an unemployed person in Paris and later in London. The friendships, the conversations, and the conditions - It’s all there.

The memoir of experiences in the saddening (and sometimes exciting) environment of poverty.

I highly recommend this special book!

Fun fact the book is not just about unemployment, the protagonist works for a time as a dishwasher in some Paris hotel kitchens!

The great Anthony Bourdain praised this book for its depictions of the lifestyle of kitchen workers in the 1920s, pointing out that many of Orwells observations are still relevant today.

I really enjoyed reading this, in a grim sad kind of way. It’s a fascinating peek into the living conditions of a different era.

George Orwell, isn’t it? I liked it when I read it. There are better books, but this one is ok, and kind of short.

Huh, never heard of this one. Kind of sounds like Henry Miller. I’ll try and see if I can find a copy, thanks for the recommendation.
