Marsha P. Johnson, born on this day in 1945, was a civil rights activist, founding member of the Gay Liberation Front and the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R.), and participant in the Stonewall Uprising of 1969.

Johnson was one of the first drag queens to go to the Stonewall Inn after they began allowing women and drag queens inside; it was previously a bar for only gay men.

On the early morning hours of June 28th, 1969, the Stonewall uprising occurred. While the first two nights of rioting were the most intense, the clashes with police would result in a series of spontaneous demonstrations and marches through the gay neighborhoods of Greenwich Village for roughly a week afterwards.

According to the New-York Historical Society, “While there are many conflicting stories about the uprising’s start, it is clear that Marsha was on the front lines. In one account, she started the uprising by throwing a shot glass at a mirror. In another, she climbed a lamppost and dropped a heavy purse onto a police car, shattering the windshield.” After Stonewall, Johnson became more involved in activism, helping found the Gay Liberation Front.

To help provide a home for vulnerable trans youth, Marsha and her friend Sylvia Rivera together formed the Street Transvestite Activist Revolutionaries (STAR). The first STAR House was in the back of a seemingly abandoned truck in Greenwich Village, housing nearly 24 people.

One morning, they returned to the truck just as its driver was pulling away with STAR residents sleeping inside, who were then forced to jump from a moving vehicle. Marsha and Sylvia then rented and fixed up a dilapidated building to house STAR residents for eight months before being evicted.

Shortly after a pride parade in 1992, Johnson’s body was discovered floating in the Hudson River. Police ruled the death a suicide, but Johnson’s friends and other members of the local community insisted Johnson was not suicidal and noted that the back of Johnson’s head had a massive wound.

Johnson was cremated and, following a funeral at a local church, friends released her ashes over the river.

The 2012 documentary “Pay It No Mind – The Life and Times of Marsha P. Johnson” heavily features segments from a 1992 interview with Johnson, filmed shortly before her death.

I think I have to go into the specific flaws of Legends Arceus first, because it’s in the very core of the game and let’s go obviously doesn’t have the same problems.

The core gameplay loop of earning stars felt like a giant list of chores after awhile. If they reduced the quantity of repetitive tasks then it’d have been much better. Legends also has poor QoL features - I would’ve liked an oblivion/skyrim-esque compass ui for the open areas. Wild pokemon attacking the player is an annoyance imo. Wild pokemon attacking the player doesn’t really present a real risk of blacking out (unless you’re very, very careless) because it’s relatively easy to escape via ride pokemon, you can send out a pokemon in battle as a distraction (and win or try to move further away in the process) and there’s fast travel once you’re out of range. I don’t think there’s a good way to make this mechanic non-irritating. Increasing the difficulty/challenge would be frustrating in its own way (that’d be too punishing). The core issue is that you, the player character, don’t directly engage the enemy in combat and thus you can’t really fight back “normally”. The limited inventory system is much too harsh, and expanding it is much too costly. The background music barely plays. The combat system is really wonky and the battle order is janky especially with agile and strong. I personally don’t like the sinnoh region and hisui feels even blander. It also has, I feel, the weakest regional dex of any region. I hate the galaxy team, and there is some shitty colonial apologia in the game (I was hoping to side with the diamond/pearl clans. Also Melli did nothing wrong, colonizers can’t be trusted; I hate how he’s portrayed unsympathetically). Finally, there is a very large lack of trainer battles compared to wild battles. I feel that the former is more exciting than the latter. Oh, and there’s no boxlink (inevitable given the time period, but still)

Let’s go (or literally any other pokemon game except D/P/Pt/BD/SP being set in sinnoh) not having the unique flaws of legends mean they’re automatically better.

I think Let’s Go’s core strength is its simplicity and charms. It’s meant to be a cozy game with a cutesy/cozy atmosphere and a focus on pokemon interaction (following, riding etc). I play pokemon for the charms of pokemon (?) more than anything else, and I think Let’s Go and Heartgold are the most obviously focused on that aspect (pokemon gameplay/mechanics kinda lacking in comparison to other games in existence tbh). It was much easier for me to get attached to my let’s go team than my arceus team. I haven’t touched pokemon in some time, and I played arceus much more recently than let’s go. I still remember my let’s go team, but I can barely remember my arceus team. In terms of wild vs trainer battles, it’s the exact opposite of Legends Arceus, which suits my subjective tastes better. In addition to phys/special split and fairy typing, Let’s Go also modifies quite a few trainer teams and movesets for the better imo (in addition to adding new trainers along the routes). Kanto isn’t my favorite region but I do think it’s a big step up from Sinnoh. And the background music is a lovely remaster, and actually plays most/all the time. The core gameplay loop is more “conventional” than arceus but it is way better than the pure boredom that is arceus. Let’s go is obviously a shorter and simpler game, but it managed to make me feel happy. I didn’t really feel anything throughout the entirety of arceus.

Oh I am HERE for this analysis. You bring up a lot of great points, especially some beats of the storyline of Arceus being iffy at best. And I agree, Melli did nothing wrong! Sinnoh isn’t my favorite area but I had fun exploring regardless. I think I just vibed with the pokedex being more akin to trying to research them… that said, they could’ve made it less grindy. I also liked walking up and seeing how pokemon would react alone/in groups/toward me. That last bit exists in SwSh and SV to some extent too.

Let’s go is comfy and nostalgic but with a lot of the quality of life implementations of the recent games, plus the style is cute. I think for someone new to Pokemon it’s a great one to suggest imo, since as you said it’s simpler but still close enough what the core games are like.

I’m glad we could talk about this, Pokemon is a long special interest of mine. 😊

Yeah, glad we had this discussion too! I’m actually a relatively new fan of pokemon lol. Started with firered last year and played till scarlet (which is incidentally my favorite in the entire series btw) except for ultra sun/moon (I heard they kinda butchered the story/characters, which is a real shame because sun/moon shines in that area).

I occupy a sort of weird spot as a fan because I have literally no childhood memories of pokemon. I decided to get into the series after seeing scarlet/violet ads in the area near my previous workplace + randomly chance upon some fanart of manga!gold online (I thought he looked cool, read the manga up to the emerald arc and yeah he definitely is cool)

Oh, cool! I’m an oldie lol, my first was red. Welcome to the world of Pokemon, enjoy the cute critters and weird dex entries. possum-party

And tbh despite the bugs and whatnot, I’d consider SV to be a solid entry in the series. Scarlet > Violet, we get the better paradox 'mons. And Koraidon is goofy as hell and thus, adorable. (ALSO TRANS RIGHTS FOR THE FEATHERS)

Definitely enjoying it. I think primeape --> annihilape is my favorite dex entry because of the dark humor

Agree with everything, though violet paradox mons are pretty cool too. Really excited for the DLC.
