Yeah, it sucked. It was at the height of end of history delusion.
Between that show and Grey’s Anatomy, one of my worst exes once made me sit through some of the most nauseatingly arrogant affluenza fever dreams that could be conjured by the early 2000s.
I blame early 2000s TV around 11% for the housing crisis, it’s one of the first times the zeitgeist has looked at cities and said “Hey! Rich people and trust fund kids only! Go fuck off to the suburbs that we ironically came from, poors!”
How many characters on “Friends” actually had a source of income that wasn’t being the failsons or faildaughters of off-screen rich parents? How could they afford Generic New York Luxury Apartment #666 like that?
I actually love Grey’s Anatomy, because I approach it from the perspective of ‘What if we let a bunch of horny teenagers be doctors?’
The subtle propaganda of it was staggering. “Look at how these affluent yet overworked narcissists somehow have over 24 hours in a day to do residency and also fuck and slapfight each other over stupid petty bullshit. What’s your excuse, poors?”
Oh yeah, in hindsight it was horrible but hey, most of the characters die horribly violent and hilarious deaths, so honestly it’s a wash from me.
