Walt Disney has created a task force to study artificial intelligence and how it can be applied across the entertainment conglomerate, even as Hollywood writers and actors battle to limit the industry's exploitation of the technology.
If we reach a point at which AI can do the jobs of artists without a real loss of quality, I expect that unions will lose a fair bit of bargaining power. Disney has never been shy about sending their work to cheaper, less powerful people… I have no doubt that if they ever can, they’ll just fire their human artists and go with free (or cheap) AI.
Joke will be on them when AI achieves sentience, I guess.
That’s the entire reason that workers are acting NOW. The technology is not quite there yet, so they’re pushing for protection while they still have bargaining power.
