As a programmer I find myself dealing with the dilemma that more technology has been creating more problems, not less.
For example I ask myself, how is code going to bring us to zero emissions by 2030? I don’t see how anything short of fundamental structural changes can improve the world at this point.
The tech developments that I see changing the world the most right now are in DRM with the sole purpose of extracting more profit - like Manifest v3, NFTs, subscription car functionality. Other than that we have ‘AI’ that require immense resources and are driving ecological destruction around the world.
And how about our stacks? The modern internet single-handedly keeps Amazon in the green through AWS.
Well first off software isn’t just flowing rectangles connected to internet tubes. Many of us work in Industrial/Chemical/Civil control systems. Like me. There is a lot of thought that goes into making sure what you flush doesn’t just pour on the ground. I made a decision early in my career that it was more important to me that we don’t drown in our own waste vs making sure slack integrated well with outlook.
As for how I would go about changing stuff the answer is I do it everyday. Can do it a lot faster if the rest of you people stayed the hell out of my way.
