Does it not? It still does in my experience. Our company has these weird company wide meetings where they tell us how they’re doing great, everything’s great, but because growth isn’t “double digit” due to inflation so there is a pay freeze. (I’d love even a less than double digit pay rise - even though that’s still a pay cut with inflation).
Pretty much exactly what you are saying. Employees are grumbling, but don’t want to get laid off and are uncertain about the job market.
Feel you on that pay freeze bs. Funny that my boss and his boss just got promotions like 2 weeks before the email went out about how raises will be “on hold”.
I’m pretty sure it does work, actually. That’s the problem.
But they can’t afford better wages because they need the record profits for the shareholders. The company has a fiduciary duty to the share holders, not to the employees.
You can never trust a company to do what’s right for the employees, they exists to exploit their labour.
and that’s part of the problem!
Doesn‘t work on me, or on our unions for that matter, they gave out statements pointing exactly this out when they got told they “ask for too much”.
It does work on people who for whatever reason don‘t question things and just follow orders and believe everything as long as it comes from someone with money/status.
That is unfortunate, but those who can see through this can try and try to explain it and luckily a union can have an effect even without approval from everyone.
Those who join a union have already been converted though, there’s so many people out there who still aren’t willing/ don’t know how to join a union!
