As the title says; I am looking for some really pro tips to take in mind for my newly constructed home. As I will start with a blank canvas, I do not want to make any mistakes. I see this as the opportunity to make the smartest possible home!

So with pro tips, I mean the really advanced tips or things you forgot when starting from 0. I already have taken things to mind, like;

  • Preparing a good naming conventions
  • Migrating from a RPI4 to a Nuc NUC8i5BEH (Proxmox)
  • Putting Cat6a anywhere I can
    • Also for POE AP’s and camera’s
  • Backups are taken care of
  • I have plenty outlets (basic ones via the developer)

Some rules;

  • My new house is developer by a project developer. So no options for crazy extensions and such
  • All outer walls are build from concrete, so not really great for drilling.

Thank you for making my new house the smartest in the street (possible town)!

Edits, based on your tips:

  1. All switches will have a neutral wire. Except for some two-way switches. Thank you u/Chronios.
  2. I might switch from Cat7 to Cat6a. I could get the 7’s cheap - but due to many comments on the Cat7’s I might consider Cat6a instead. Thank you u/IAmBigFootAMA
  3. Some rooms, like the living, get multiple conduits for data. Also for PoE sensors, camera’s and AP’s.
  4. 25 mm conduit running to the attic / second floor for solar and two 19 mm’s for data and future use cases. Thank you u/Apple2T4ch

And thanks for all other comments, I will certainly circle back to this post for future reference.
