While we can’t share the exact definition, we look at moderator actions, modmail actions, and post/comment activity within the subreddit, and designate an “active” status if there is a sustained level of activity over the last ~3 months.
aka the criteria is whatever we want it to be and we can use this to get rid of whoever we want.

Yep that’s definitely the reason, but overall this might be a good thing for communities
It makes it easier to get rid of old mods, while also allowing them to come back and continue like before. I’m leaning on this change being more good than not
There were definitely a lot of abandoned subs that sat completely unattended for years.
Makes it harder to do protests like the ones before.
Maybe somewhat, but I think most of the subreddit closures were done by active mods
I think it was just the one big sub that went NSFW despite the active mods not wanting it
Mods have long been asking for ways to remove senior/inactive mods, but we didn’t get it till it became a headache to admin too

“Right” in this context is referring to a right/roll system. For example, Moderator is a role and the ability to remove comments is a right associated with that role.
No one is talking about the right to food, or the right to remain silent.
This is just to get rid of people that set up their own sub to be a mod and use modtool right on the API to make their 3rd party app keep working.
