It seemed like he was really awesome but repeatedly kept undoing himself by being an asshole or an idiot. Was made to eat shit towards the end but somehow magically was able to beat Endo (without any practice or study of his technique and equipment). Then he comes home and starts crying when he holds his child. Is he crying because he realised he fucked up or what is going on? What is the message here?
At the end of the movie, he’s not redeemed. When he praises Endo and wishes him luck, he really only means it in trying to look gracious and also, Endo winning the tournament after he beat him would unofficial confer him as the best player in the world Marty acts like a complete entitled asshole to everyone in his life, you expect him to be a sociopath, like he’s not fully human, he’s beyond morality, more like a wild animal. but actually all the harm he causes was by a mundane guy who had the full capacity for empathy and self control as anyone else, which gets hinted at through the film, but the final be scene is the final damning reveal.
