The venture capital free money train is gone and they’re realizing their revenue models make zero sense.
A nice email from Google explaining that would have been lovely.
Same reasons here. Also, if you regularly watch Youtube on smart TVs/streaming boxes, etc. it’s just the most hassle free way to not get ads there.
I pay Google for Google domains (shutting down, being transferred to somewhere) and YT premium and they didn’t tell me either of these things.
Personally I just want more trees and for big mega parking lots to be ripped out
Very interesting! Also methane, of course. Should have shorthanded to GHG.
That’s a pretty frightening belief. Earth is just some bus stop your soul sits at waiting for heaven, so why take care of it and why fret about all the suffering that takes place on it.
For all we know, death may be total end of your soul/consciousness/whatever and Earth may be the only place with complex life in the universe. And we’re trashing it.
They legitimately do think they know more than NASA. At least your average conservative voter. Conservative politicians probably believe at least some of the science but deny it to keep getting voters. Conservative voters think climate change isn’t real because it still snows in winter and people who have studied climate their entire lives are just part of a conspiracy to take away their trucks.
Next year is going to be worse. And the year after that even more so. And it will continue like that for decades, probably centuries.
Even if I could tolerate dumbasses who don’t think CO2 emissions (and destruction of multiple natural CO2 sinks) are the driver of all this, it’s still infuriating that they don’t seem even concerned that the world is getting hotter and more deadly and are focused on some nonsense topics that no one in their right mind would give that much of a shit about.
Avoiding corporate software companies and abandoning established communities on principle isn’t something your average person does. Also, wrapping your head around the Fediverse, even if the sign-up process is as simple as other platforms, can be an obstacle for most people.
Yep. Used to be my fiance’s college laptop.
Works for me, running about 30 containers. The Philips hub has recently been replaced by a Conbee II
I have a backup script that runs every morning and I had it send a notification with ntfy on how many errors/warnings occurred. With backups it’s important to actually know your backups are working.
I also have it report battery voltage and health every so often, which should hopefully give me advance warning of a spicy pillow in my laptop server.
Vikunja is a todo-app I enjoy quite a bit, but it only has email notifications. I made a script that runs every 15 minutes that reads all the tasks from the Vikunja API and sends me reminders or overdue tasks, and ntfy allows me to configure buttons on the notification which allows me to mark things done without having to open Vikunja.
It’s a pretty good tool for anywhere you would want notifications.
In Linux it is possible to turn the screen off after a timeout and keep the system on with the lid closed.
Vikunja has become my whole life todo list app and I throw server stuff on there too. I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit.
Docker cp piped into restic, uploading to wasabi. Works well, I recently recovered from a hard drive failure and everything just worked.
