  • I am not an Arch-user, but I would say so. At least Nix itself claims that their unstable channel is the largest and most up-to-date package repository currently followed by AUR. So yes, I think you can have best of both worlds - a rock solid base system with the newest software via Nix. It even gets better with Home Manager.

  • Creating a snapshot is not the backup itself. It is basically freezing the current state of your files from this point on and then remembering what has chanced compared to the snapshot. So yes, it is normal that this takes no time since nothing is copied on your hard drive. If you want to backup the snapshot you need to make an actual backup of it. This is possible with btrfs. But since I haven’t done it yet, I can’t tell you the exact command.

  • Currently Ubuntu LTS on my server and an old Laptop. On the server I will switch to Debian now soon because I don’t like Snap, and think that does not belong on a server at all. For my Desktop I wanted to try out Arch. Most likely it will be EndeavourOS. EndeavourOS because it’s mostly vanilla ArchOS with a nice installer. I will not use Manjaro because they are much more opinionated and do not have the best reputation (there were multiple issues in the past were they let run out certificates for example).

  • Also been on Reddit for more than 12 years now. But with recent development regarding third party apps, I’ve made my peace with it. As soon as those apps shut down, I’ll abandon my Reddit account. However, I’ll not be going to delete my post and comments, since I don’t see any sense in doing so. Reddit will not care as some kind of protest, and my data should have already been scraped by dozens of search engines and AI-training companies anyway.
