Poor Richter and Lawine, taken out by a replica of someone who wasn’t even one of the test takers! Wonder how Kanne will react to that.
Mages in this world are just so much tougher; not sure about real life but in other shows a heart piercing wound would, if not kill immediately, be incapacitating instantly. So luckily they were still able to function and break the bottles to save themselves.
I wonder who Frieren fought 80 years ago that forced her to use that special magic technique…… Oh.
Turns out Pencilgon did a lot of things off-screen:
All before walking out of the cave. It seems she was prepared to get rid of her PK status beforehand.
I have wondered what Psyger-100 meant by laundering in ep 19, and we got the explanation this time. (Still unsure how that would be relevant to a negotiation though.)
The Tomb of Truth Pencilgon got was the same as Sunraku’s, so there wasn’t additional lore.
How is hunting unique monsters a profitable enterprise? Pencilgon specifically said it in the monetary sense, but she spent a ton of mahni fighting Wethermon and hasn’t got any back yet. Perhaps we’ll see how she turns a profit in a future episode?
Wolfgang is a German male given name traditionally popular in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The name is a combination of the Old High German words wolf, meaning “wolf”, and gang, meaning “path”, “journey”, “travel”. (Wikipedia)
This matches the kanji name 旅狼, travelling wolves, and also the title of this chapter revealed last episode: “Venturing Wolves, Be Ambitious.”
anything that was in Pencilgon’s inventory would have dropped when she died
That’s true. Would be funny when they try to finish the end game and forget that they need a piece that Psyga-0 holds onto.
I wonder if that sword Pencilgon used and Psyga-0 did not take has any significance in the future?
Emul is so cute!!!
In typical MMO fashion, you gotta do some fetch-quests before the story can proceed.
The devs means it when they say Wethermon is a mid-game boss. His follow up quest items are labelled delta, #4 out of 7.
That’s lots of loot for Sanraku alone. Do the other two also get some Wethermon-related drops? I’m most interested in what game lore they got, though.
Emul is so cute!!!
Edit:
Addendum: I saw some people in discussions elsewhere thinking Sanraku needed Divinity-level gear for Wethermon’s moves. The Japanese word used is 設備 setsubi so it is not “equip-able gear” that is needed, it is some kind of “Divine-era Facility” (presumably to decipher the cube containing Wethermon’s moves).
This test is about teamwork indeed when basically what you need to do is to tell your teammates how to kill yourself, without being able to hide any abilities since your mirror copy would not hide them.
In Frieren’s case it is not too bad. She’s so much stronger than the others, they probably cannot defeat her copy without her participation. So she’s relatively safer than the others from having their weakness revealed.
Both Frieren hugging the lady saying she smelled good and Fern pouting from that were so cute.

The quest is finished. IMO the timing is quite unfortunate, it occurred on the night of a large update. Players who heard the announcement might thought the three were just lucky to be the first to encounter new content and clear it, when it had nothing to do with the update and was accomplished through meticulous planning and preparation.
With Wethermon put to rest, no one else would know how strong he was. It would probably be unthinkable IRL for an MMO to make content that can only be enjoyed by a single party, but that might be part of Shangri-la Frontier’s Kamige appeal. I wonder if it has something else prepared (e.g. some kind of Shadow of Wethermon monster) for other players.
Curiously Rei was only worried about Pencilgon. Does she know Oikatzo’s player is male?
So in the (distant?) past at least one person opened a mimic detected by Mikheit and got a real treasure chest, causing the spell to have a known 99% success rate instead of 100%. Could Frieren be that person and she was just too humble to admit it?
Also, from what we’ve seen of the damage caused by mimics (essentially nil), a 1% chance of getting real treasure is not too bad depending on the potential value of the treasure ~as many gacha game players know~.
Wow, they made a special ending visual for this episode too. Non-credit version is on Youtube.
Next episode review mentions mimic. Frieren is doomed.
Oh, I still find it funny that Frieren can detect that she was detected by Denken. It is like a submarine operator saying “we have been detected by passive sonar!” which makes no sense but I guess magic doesn’t work that way.
I wouldn’t call luck itself a skill, but the abilities to capitalise on luck and to solve issues that might arise due to lack of luck are certainly skills.
That is also my take away from watching streamers play roguelike games. The not so good players want to be dealt good hands, but the good players can do well (or at least not lose their run) even when not favored by the random number generator.
I thought Modred was mistaken when he described a world full of “grey tombstones” while modern earth buildings were shown on screen, only to find out earth was devastated at the end.
I forgot this was a 13-episode season until the credits rolled. This felt like a 5-minute episode. I guess now the real boss arrives and all the key persons are in place for the conclusion. Sad that we don’t get to see more of the rest of the Alcohol Soft crew though.
The source material is quite long (20+ volumes of light novels) and I think there will be elements introduced that don’t pay off during this run of the anime.
Did the Princess paid the Priestess by putting precious stones in her purse? It wasn’t very clear.
There could be something in the future with this strange religion they mentioned, with all these story-lines intertwining.
I think she hoped Frieren would have changed since last they met and become the kind of mage she likes, but Frieren being Frieren, disappoints her again.
However, Frieren revealed, it was that spell Serie dismissed, the spell that produces a flower garden, that ultimately ended up conquering the Demon King.
