We are in dire need to replace our aging phpBB forums, and after lengthy consideration and various test installations Lemmy is the current favorite. Let us know what you think ;)
If you do host a lemmy instance, would you allow FOSS games to create communities there? (I contribute to Veloren and am in the Tomatenquark community)
That is exactly the idea, similar to how our current forums host a series of FOSS game projects like SuperTuxKart.
I think we need genre specific forums like rpgs, fps, mmos, puzzle games, platformers, strategy, simulators. and edutanement (educational software)
Why? I think subforums only make sense if there is enough traffic that would drown out some topic specific discussions otherwise.
Given the low number of posts on our forum these days, a single forum with a STK subforum would probably suffice tbh.
that would be awesome
Lemmy is finally taking off!
Well, given how dead our forums have been the last couple of years… maybe not ;)
Dead is harsh. Open source games are a little light on life but they’re not dead :)
well, you can always replace the current graphics in open source games with zombies, and then we can necro them back to life.
Well, we’re finally seeing more lemmy instances starting to pop up
any news on this?
Waiting for 0.9 release for testing it on my server.
FOSS and indie games getting their own Lemmy instance? I love the idea! Gimme a PM or something when you’re live, I’d love to follow 😀👍🏻
This is exciting! I would love to see more users, especially libre software focused ones.
Lemmy and discourse are your best choices (IMO). But Lemmy seems much more smooth :)
Discourse (and the similar Flarum) was my first thought too, but besides it being quite server resource intensive (typical Ruby software), I received a lot of push-back from current users about the heavy javascript use and general dislike of the UI.
Yeah, when are we going to get actual forums again instead of looking at the server owners old resume.
I actually get the SQL error, but Hagish previously explained that there is some routing issues when it goes down, so some other stuff on the same server can come up ;)
Neat. If they don’t want to host their own, they could also just make a community here, and we’ll make sure they mod it.
I am one of the main moderators and system admins of Freegamedev.net ;) And since we are hosting other projects, our own instance would be better for sure. Lets see :)
Charlie here. So that makes 2 of us.
Welcome to our new OpenSourceGames moderator ;)
