I don’t understand why they do this when people are pissed at fascist cops and the pandemic handling at the same time. Do they really fear the response of cops (to letting a bunch of literal murderers take the fall to alleviate the anger) so much? Or are they just being stupid? Or they are not one bit afraid of any uprising of the people?
Yeah it doesn’t make sense to me either. Seems really harmless for the ruling class to have a few sacrificial lambs, and it would appease everyone, and show that the system worksTM
IMO you’re right that they fear the cops response. Both the rulers AND the cops know that cops are their armed guards, so the deal made is that cops must have complete immunity for enforcing class rule, and in exchange the cops keep them safe. The cops probably welcome larger civil unrest as it makes them that much more necessary, in the same way that the US invites terrorist attacks so they can empower the military more.
Thinking about it, this is probably a bigger contradiction that already has a name, but I don’t know what it is. The empire / capitalists want things to appear politically stable in their home countries, yet at the same time their enforcers welcome instability and the empowerment it brings.
