And in lieu of the welfare-state checklist that currently passes for a definition of socialism, we will recover a much more practical and useful definition, one that centers work rather than leisure, and so better captures the spirit of the myriad tasks to be accomplished in the socialist stage: “From each according to their ability, to each according to their work.”

this is a great statement, i see way too much people disregard China because they don’t have the state-funded safety nets that some imperial core countries have.

Ugh, another nationalist, Stalinist Trotsky hater. Trotsky was a dreamer and lacked pragmatism, followed by, Trotsky was too ruthless when ensuring the survival of the revolution type. Lenin said, “Trotsky is always the smartest person in the room.” Trotsky said, “I am the smartest person in the room.” Just because the comrade was an asshole, doesn’t make his contributions any less valuable. Without Lev Bronstein, 1917 would have been a footnote in history.

Apparently, Rosa Luxembourg was also such a doctrinaire, giving her life fighting fascism doesn’t count.

Not sure how they managed to ignore Emma Goldman, Mao, and Bukharin on their “not worthy idealist” list.

You’re missing the point of the piece and not engaging with the topic of this discussion, which is China’s socialism. This is not the time or place for the millionth rehash of the Stalin vs Trotsky argument, regardless which side of it you fall on.

The author of the piece included reference to the dogmatic versus pragmatic camps. I did not make my response up from whole cloth.

Go to Hexbear.net. We don’t maintain left unity for Trotskyists.

Without Lev Bronstein, 1917 would have been a footnote in history.

And stick that great man theory up your ass.

The point of this essay is about an example of long-term actually-existing socialist states in practice, not about the figures in general.

I’ll concur his role was necessary but don’t tell me he singlehandedly did it, with your ‘footnote’ remark.

Honestly, I think there’s a pretty good theory that his time in detainment and torture really messed up his head. Nothing can be confirmed since not much about his life was written down beyond what small bits we got but yeah.

It’s basically the terminal stage for a trot when they can’t ignore labor aristocracy any longer and have serious nihilism issues.
