The president assured that the country will begin “as soon as possible” a universal vaccination campaign against Covid-19.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reported that his government is evaluating buying the Sputnik V vaccine that Russia developed against Covid-19, to start a universal vaccination campaign in the country as soon as possible.

“Communication continues in the case of Russia, about the vaccine that they are making known and are going to apply soon,” said López Obrador in his usual corresponding morning press conference on Monday.

“I tell you something that applies to these things, but fundamentally that has to do with the health of the people. In this important matter there should be no ideologies, "added the president.

López Obrador pointed out that he could speak with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, in the same way that he would with the president of the United States or China, to study the possibility of acquiring the first available vaccine to combat the coronavirus epidemic.

"If in Russia, in China, they have the vaccine first and it is shown to be effective in saving lives, we immediately establish communication. I would immediately speak with the President of China and President Putin, so that we could have the vaccine, and the same in the case of the US, as we have a very good relationship with President Trump, "he said.

López Obrador also said he was willing to be the first to be vaccinated, if they acquired the Russian medicine.

“If we see that it gives results, and is effective, we establish communication. And if there is availability, go ahead. And so that there is no doubt about the importance it has for us, I would be the first to let myself be vaccinated, because it matters a lot to me,” he said. .

The governor revealed that Mexico has a special financial fund destined to acquire the antidote, and that this will depend solely on the availability and effectiveness of those that come onto the market.

Mexico and Argentina announced last week an agreement with the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the Carlos Slim Foundation to begin producing and distributing the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford in Latin America.

However, the weekend also reported that this vaccine will not be available until the first quarter of 2021. For this reason, it does not rule out the possibility of acquiring the Russian vaccine to serve the Mexican population as soon as possible.

Mexico counts more than 522,000 cases of Covid-19, of which some 56,700 have lost their lives. This Sunday brought more than 4,400 new infections and 214 deaths, behavior that has remained stable in the last month and a half.

Mexico City is the area most affected by the pandemic, followed by the States of Mexico, Guanajuato, Tabasco, Veracruz, Puebla and Nuevo León, all with more than 20,000 confirmed cases, and deaths of more than 1,500.
