I’ve only been here for a few days, so I don’t know the “history” of lemmygrad and its relationship with the other instances. Do we have a running count of the instances that have blocked us?

I know they’re ignorant liberals, and obviously as a principled Marxist I’m ready to respond to their pre-programmed, anti-Marxist rhetoric, but there’s communities on Reddit in which I’d never had a single interaction with someone spewing anti-ML bullshit.

For example, I’m very interested in NBA basketball. I like to be involved in the drama around the game. If a large group of NBA enthusiasts start a community on an instance that has us blocked, I’m locked out because the administrators of that instance shit their little britches seeing a passionate Marxist speak their mind on lemmygrad. I was thinking about starting a community here for the NBA, hopefully we gather enough members to facilitate content creation in smaller communities, despite the rampant blocking.

Edit: Now that I think about it, honestly I think I’m fine just making communities for shit I’m interested in here, regardless of our connection to those other instances. Looking through the ones I know have blocked us made me cringe off the face of the planet. Wouldn’t even want to talk basketball with them.

easiest way is to make a lemmy.ml account imo. I will be honest, it’s both a little grim (in that it will be hard to interact with a lot of people) and nice (that we wont have to deal with the worst of the lib brainrot), but for the most part if you see an instance you don’t recognize probably safe to assume they block us. There are a couple, like blahaj, that are ok with us but the biggest libby instances are blocking us on creation

I’m alright with my lemmygrad account. As I said in my edit, the brainrot is mindnumbing in those instances. I love lemmygrad, I’m an extremely passionate Marxist. The community here is so great I’d love to discuss things other than ML philosophy and really make it a Reddit replacement here.

I think I submitted my comment right before your edit (if not I’m pretty inebriated so sorry for that lol). Regardless, I get the sentiment of not wanting to engage with them lol. For me personally, I like to help people with the random questions they ask in c/lemmy and c/lemmy_support so it’s a little frustrating not being able to comment to them, so I’ll probably make a lemmy.ml account in the next few days

Lemmygrad.ml is specifically our communist instance. It’s against our rules to come in and start arguing everywhere in favor of capitalism, and our admins will ban accounts that do it from our site.

Lemmy.ml is the instance run by the devs. They’re comrades, so they won’t ban us from lemmy for arguing in favor of Russia, for example, like a Reddit admin might. But because they want fo keep lemmy known as just a free and opensource software, libs arent going to be banned from lemmy so expect to get into many many more arguments with libs there if you argue for Russia or any other topic reddit libs go nuts over.

There are a libs who like to use instances (biggest being beehaw.org) that keep us blocked, so they can’t see our comments at all, even when you directly reply to their comment in lemmy.ml. If you wouldn’t want to interact with the kind of person who seeks out an instance that specifically blocks our comments, I would just stay on your lemmygrad account. Just keep in mind to try and check usernames if they have their display name set, and if they’re not on a lemmy.ml account there’s like a 50/50 shot they’ll be on an instance that bans lemmygrad and they won’t be able to see your comment (unless it’s like a mastodon account or some other fediverse account, I dont think I’ve seen a different platforms instance ban us yet)

I get a little frustrated not being able to leave helpful comments if they’re on an instance that does that, so I might make a lemmy.ml account

To add to what @ImOnADiet@lemmygrad.ml just said, Lemmy is the software that’s run on the server of lemmygrad.ml, lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, and many of the other instances. Lemmy is one of many softwares (including Mastodon, Friendica, Kbin, Calckey) that are used for federated social media. The network of all of these federated servers that can talk to each other is called the fediverse.
