Did you know ProleWiki has a library?

On it, we self-host dozens (maybe even 100) of books, texts, transcripts, documents and other things of interest to communists.

You can visit it here: https://en.prolewiki.org/wiki/ProleWiki:Library

Now, if you’re me, you might be thinking it’s kind of a mess right now. Truth is, we quickly added this library in 2020 and it just kept growing since then. We’re now in a situation where the model we use (pile everything up on top of each other) is quickly becoming saturated.

I have some ideas to fix the library, but for that I need some feedback. And possibly some help, if this is something you’re interested in. I could use some UI/UX specialists, and maybe a PHP/mediawiki programmer to implement our new library lol

But first things first, I’ve prepared a short survey to help us collect some feedback and prepare for the next step. You can take the survey here:

https://questionpro.com/t/AX7J7ZySkD

It’s completely anonymous!

I’m not knowledgeable about PHP or MediaWiki, but I am decent at front-end work. At the end of the day there’s going to be HTML and CSS used in there, and maybe client side JS, so depending on the codebase I may be helpful. If you’re looking for UI work I’ve done, you can check out the PRs I’ve made to the Lemmy UI repo.

Yeah sounds great, I’ll keep your info in mind for if/when we move forward with that!

We really need a mediawiki specialist because it’s its own beast, while it works on HTML/CSS/PHP like most websites, it’s not as easy to work with as Wordpress and definitely not as free.

hey comrade, would you be interested in helping us with CSS formatting?

Essentially we use the Citizen skin by default, which looks really sleek and cool, but it requires a lot of CSS tweaks to be rendered usable. We’ve already done a lot of work on the desktop version, but not much on the mobile version – for this reason, the mobile version of prolewiki uses the Minerva skin.

It’s a lot of work to bring it up to what we need on top of our other work on the wiki 😭 and we’d love to have devs working with us to help out on the front and back end!

You can see the CSS here already:

Done. It looks great comrade. I made a few suggestions, mainly that mediawiki might have some smart table sorting and filtering extensions, so that you could potentially put every book in a single table, but filter by author, and sort by year.

Thanks! Yeah, we might use a table depending on our abilities 😬

I have no idea what’s possible on mediawiki (technically everything if you edit the PHP I guess, but still) and I made the mockup in a card display cause it’s modern and easy to browse – and people love it in the survey too

But when I mocked it up in photoshop I had no idea if this was even viable for us lol. A table might be sort of a hacky way to do it, like they used to do in the 90s.

I’m so glad you have the capital mangas on there. I was looking hard for it a while ago, but only found a broken link to libcom.com

They can actually be found on several manga scan websites, but that’s exactly the reason why I reuploaded them!
