This list was given to me by @lelkins@lemmygrad.ml on the genzedong.xyz matrix server
shoot games:
xonotic - quake-like with pretty nice graphics. uses a heavily modified version of the quake 1 engine, and it still looks very nice
openarena - quake 3 with free assets. compatible with most, if not all quake 3 mods
red eclipse - a really fancy foss fps game with parkour elements! hats!
freedoom - doom 1 and 2 but fully clean from copyright. the music slaps.
mega man 8-bit deathmatch - a doom-based arena shooter game. i consider this open source because it’s made with open formats like wads and pk3s, and the developers actively promote modding of the game… and because it uses zandronum. zandronum’s foss.
\
minetest:
minetest (now known as luanti for that 5.10.0 version) - minecraft if it was epic. shaders built-in. mod support from the start. many great games. IT’S MINETEST. REALLY NICE STUFF, HONESTLY.
\
strategy games:
openra - if you have assets from red alert 1, you can play red alert through this, even with multiplayer!
openhv - free and open source strategy game that uses the openra engine. based on a scrapped game with the graphics done by the guy behind opentyrian
unciv - civ 5 but libre, with mod support and multiplayer
mindustry - very good real time strategy game similar to factorio but with waves and stuff. another good game that i tried before knowing about foss stuff
\
platformers:
sonic robo blast 2 - most say it’s the best sonic game in general. oldest sonic fangame that still gets updates and uses a heavily modified doom engine. holy fucking shit, it’s so good. under the gpl licence
supertux - you know super mario world? this is like mario but with speed. and tux.
super mario bros x - the classic mario fangame engine created by redigit. yes. the terraria people. AND IT’S OPEN SOURCE. THE WAY TO PLAY IT ON LINUX IS “THEXTECH”, IT’S REALLY GOOD!!!
\
racing games:
supertuxkart - the most mario kart-like game around. you can play as tux… and the xfce rat. i like the xfce rat
dr. robotnik’s ring racers - i talked about this game. highly recommend, feels like a full game. more chaotic than any mario kart out there
sonic robo blast 2 kart (srb2kart) - older version of ring racers. made more for multiplayer and less complicated, still pretty good. most likely more active compared to ring racers btw
\
top-down shooter games:
opentyrian - classic shmup known as “tyrian 2000” is in the public domain! the creator of the assets helped with openhv! it’s so good!!!
powermanga - i put this here for the funny name. it’s ok, imagine galaga. it’s like galaga
taisei project - it’s touhou. i can’t play touhou. not even easy mode. have fun. it’s even in your web browser too.
there are more foss roguelikes because the entire genre was grown up with foss
\
shattered pixel dungeon - the nicest game on mobile. one of the first foss games i have ever played. also on pc. i played it on so many trips and waiting lines, holy shit
doomrl - wanna play doom in a turn-based roguelike way? this is it. graphics made by the guy behind spelunky
spelunky classic - made by the guy behind spelunky. source code released by the guy behind spelunky. there’s “spelunky classic hd” that makes the game playable in widescreen
dungeon crawl stone soup - classic rogue experience. get the orb of zot cause i can’t. very chaotic too
cataclysm: dark days ahead - rogue but with zombies. and a lot more.
nethack - one of the oldest roguelikes around. still worked on. holy fucking shit
witch blast (it’s isaac with wizards!!)
there are so many
I’ve played this since before most of you were born.

i want to kill the jackal
i want kil the jackal or it will kil me
these are all games i have dabbled with. they’re all pretty good, even if quality-wise they’re drastically different. most of these use an open source engine, like openhv using openra for instance, and freedoom obviously using doom. i forgot to mention something like openttd which is its own thing at this point, with fully free assets and even mods. someone on hexbear enjoys it!
doom itself is a notable example of a game that was greatly helped by the foss community. it became well known for working on anything because the engine is simple to add to anything, with the gpl license allowing it and everything. the code is also very clean to the point of allowing modders to easily make source ports and total conversions with the wad and pk3 formats.
(please note that i wrote that list on a matrix chat somewhere. those are all my experiences as well. don’t worry, op got permission from me! this just scratches the surface and i WILL elaborate sooner or later!)
((also, don’t forget to pay respects to uncle sonic! sony just doesn’t get it.))
- Thrive [Git] - A very early alpha (slowly developing since 2009) evolution game inspired by Spore, but with the goal of applying scientific realism while still giving a Spore beta experience (but with a much more grand vision).
- OpenVic [Git]- Open-source engine that you can upload Victoria 2 assets to if you bought the game.
- OpenMW [Git] - Open-source engine for TES III: Morrowind if you own the original game. Also has experimental support for Oblivion and Skyrim assets, even Fallout New Vegas.
- Pokete [Git] - A terminal-based Pokémon-like game written in Python.
LSD Revamped [Git] - Open-source remake of LSD Dream Emulator.(Not fully FLOSS as it depends on the Unity engine.)- Veloren [Git] - multiplayer voxel RPG written in Rust (reminds me of Trove).
Git repos:
Thrive seems very interesting! Annoying though that it requires the M$ dotnet bloatware to build and run it.
Also I wouldn’t classify LSD Revamped as FOSS since it’s made in Unity.
we all forgot veloren. that’s some good shit.
it’s like a fully fledged mmorpg. i can’t run it because my gpu is pretty old and it doesn’t support egl or whatever it was :(
There’s also Species: ALRE. It’s not FOSS, but I believe it deserves an honorable mention given it’s one of the few evolution games being worked on (or was). It’s a more macro level version of Spore, and it’s inspired by Biogenesis. It’s made by one person who has gone through personal struggles in the past. It’s also made with dotnet, though. I find their blog pretty funny, and there was this mutual dev blog article between Thrive and Species.
Thrive and Species are both games I hope to succeed as I crave for another evolution game. (However, Species hasn’t been worked on for two years.)
OpenRCT2 - Clone of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, also supports RCT1 scenarios and assets, easy to mod and has online multiplayer support.
Augustus - Fork of Julius which is a clone of Caesar III. Augustus aims to add/change stuff in Caesar III, while Julius is just a clone of Caesar III made from scratch.
0AD - RTS inspired by Age of Empires 3.
FreeCiv - Libre clone of Sid Meier’s Civ.
FreeCol - Libre clone of Sid Meier’s Colonization
Unknown Horizons - Anno-like RTS
shiiiit i forgot 0ad! it’s really good
i remember trying freeciv and got confused, i should try playing it again. unciv is easier to understand in a way to me but freeciv looks the part mostly
openrct2 is pretty good, but requires assets. i did mention openra so this counts too! i never played rollercoaster tycoon tho and idk how to properly play openttd
iirc one of your comments about foss shooter games made me know about red eclipse, my laptop can’t properly run the latest version sadly :(
i should honestly make foss game reviews here idk
Some more that I forgot about:
Warzone 2100 - Futuristic RTS
FreedroidRPG - Top down Isometric RPG
Pingus - Lemmings clone
FreeOrion - Turn-based strategy
Naev - Space exploration RPG
Wesnoth - Turn-based strategy
PySolFC - Card game collection
how could i forget freedroidrpg, pingus and wesnoth?! and pysolfc?!?
lix is a more modern clone of lemmings maintained by the community but pingus is cuter lol
i PLAY pysolfc sometimes on my phone, it’s well made
Pancake engine for Selaco is open source, unfortunately game assets aren’t. I was really impressed what they managed to squeeze out of the Doom engine.
