I am pretty new to lemmy and I have a very basic understanding of the fediverse. My understanding is that when lemmy gets federated the account that I made for this instance will able to used on other instances and other sites that are in the fediverse. So on that note when do you guys think federation is gonna be implemented?

Correct, specifically, from this instance, you’ll be able to follow communities that exist on other instances, and those posts will show up on your front page here. This is based on community following first (which is new to the fediverse), but will eventually far down the line support user following (which is what the rest of the fediverse is based on).
Thank you for answering. How long do you think it will take to get lemmy federated though?
Probably about 2 months or so. Lots of work to do, and tons of ppl demanding feature requests at the same time.
Thats cool, thanks for all your hard work

The fediverse from what I understand is a bunch of interconnected servers that can communicate with each other. Different servers are called instances and when lemmy joins the fediverse, the account that you created on this server or instance can communicate with other lemmy instances or instances from other federated sites. Its like email where there are a bunch of different email but they can still all email each other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S57uhCQBEk0 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federation_(information_technology) Here are some links for a better explanation
