The article indicates that the USSR provided MiGs to Warsaw Pact countries like Poland and DDR. After the DDR got annexed the military equipment was seized by the BRD as well.

These 40 year old jets have performed quite well in Ukraine AFAIK. And they will still put pressure on AA defenses and Russian air force
