I just got the secure messenger, Element. Is this what we are using for sending private messages? How would i connect it to lemmy? I noticed there is also a group chat feature.
Element is separate from Lemmy. It is kinda like discord.
Create your account and then join group
You also have to be careful which home server your account is created on.
The main matrix.org is in the UK.
I created my test account on a server in USA without checking and will later remake.
If you ever get the time, a tutorial on this stuff would be cool. Written as if you were explaining it to a dummy.

Also, not all matrix groups are encrypted. In element, a little shield icon appears to tell you if it is end to end encrypted. If it is not encrypted it can potentially be read by people with access to the server on which the data is hosted
(However if it is encrypted you will not be able to read things before your join date)
Also, choose a home server which does not require a recovery email.
Having a recovery email would allow your chats to be easily connected with your identity. similarly for any of the chat apps which require a phone number to create an account (Signal etc)
i made a throwaway email for recovery when i made an account. I’m still confused about the server thing tbh

That is a list of public discussion rooms. You could join one and send a few messages and see how it all works
To know which server you are, hover over your name on the room user list on right column, or click your username on top left of element.
it will then reveal your full user tag [ @ username : server name ]
Then you can see which server you are on and then find out via other internet searches where it is. the link shared by ksynwa also lists some https://www.hello-matrix.net/public_servers.php
the place where you choose your homeserver is the account creation. When you first installed it will ask you to create an account. In this process, there is a screen with 3 choices. click the one which says choose your own server and pick one of the public servers located outside of the 14 eyes
So when you get to this stage click advanced and type in address for your chosen server
After creating account:
To join the communism lemmy you get the room address from the right of the lemmy page

the link is to a riot web app and it appears to no longer work for me after the name change to element but the room name is listed as #internationale:matrix.org
in the element client click join room and type in this room name
