I’m still a relatively new gun owner. I joined the SRA and bought a SW M&P 15-22 since it was recommended as fun to shoot, and the best for getting familiar with ARs.

So, now that I’ve pumped a few hundred rounds through it, I’m ready for an upgrade. I have very little time as an “essential” (read: exploited) worker and money is a bit tight. I like the M&P 15, as it is nearly identical to my .22, and is relatively cheap, but I see prices for manufactured weapons range from over 3k down to 600.

So, with my time very valuable, and my budget in the sub 1k range, would it be better just to buy one outright, or piece one together?

Thanks, and happy to be here.

you can build if you wannu, leave your friends behind. Cause your friends don’t build, and if they don’t build, they’re no friends of mine.

But no to be serious, it’s possible to find rather cheap rifles in pawnshops and smaller gunstores, so you should probably go price comparing there, then take the cheapest priced rifle you can find against your estimated total for building one, and decide which one’s nicer on your wallet. Keep in mind though, if you’re building, you’ll also need to buy armourers tools, which can get expensive.

The advantage for your budget with building, though, is that you can buy parts as you can afford them. That might be of benefit to you.

Def recommend building. Watch a few YouTubes to decide whether you wanna buy completely stripped, or a completed upper and lower, but even if you do the latter, you’ll probably save at least 100, and have a better quality rifle. I have no money right now but eventually I wanna do a 12.5 or 14 inch upper from bravocompanyusa, then a stripped out lower and do that myself.

But ya if you end up doing a build, I’m sure others here could give some good recommends for how much you wanna spend.

I’m saving up to do a civilian RPK build rn, shit gets expensive fast and I’ve been making little to no money lately so don’t expect many post about that any time soon.

Thanks! I’ll definitely do some more research. Seems like everyone I’ve talked to says building is much more fun.

You can pick up an m&p sport 2 for under 600 right now if you’re really savvy or under 700 fairly easily, and add/replace parts to it as you find the money to do so and as you find deals on this or that part, that way you have a functional 556 off the bat and can get used to shooting it and better decide where to go with your build, up to you. Best of luck comrade
