The resources were needed for the war which is why it was canceled, and afterwards it was considered extremely wasteful and unsocialist to divert a massive amount of material to the project when the entire country was rebuilding after the war.
Honestly cancelling it was one of the most socialist things you could do. It was determined the resources would be better served to helping the people, and so they did exactly that.
