From what I can tell the primary purpose of NATO is to keep Europe from getting too cozy with Russia and China. US funds a large chunk of the operation, and this effectively creates a protection racket. As long as Europe is dependent on US protection they have to toe the line of US policy. It looks like EU is starting to rethink this relationship with US becoming increasingly unhinged in recent years.
