We’ve asked our team around the office if they could name some historical heroes from China, and they came up empty-handed. None of us could name any impactful historical figures from the country.

The discussion came up after I realised that I could not name anyone. My American husband pointed out I don’t speak Chinese and it would make it difficult for me to know about Chinese history.

Yet answers around the office were as confused and reserved as, I imagine, the average Chinese person when they have to trudge through daily life in their dystopian nightmare.

“Heroes in China? Like in Genshin Impact?” said Ryan, our intern.

“Uh… general Tsao’s or something?” confidently said our proud Aryan boy Geoffrey.

This is not surprising, as history was banned under Mao and all were made to worship him. He is not a hero however, because Chinese people were brainwashed into deifying him. He then invented a new history for China that would fit his communist utopia out of thin air.
