Mostly the former, there are plenty of smart people who are avid liberals who just have aligning class interests (labor aristocrats), and there are tons that just get so pumped full of propaganda, for example one might think “smart people read and believe the mainstream media, because they are the arbitres of truth, therefore anything contradictory they’ve said must have either been corrected because they are so responsible or I must be remembering incorrectly.”
