Not only is it the most expensive fighter jet they could buy anywhere in the world, not only does it repeatedly crash,

You can’t repair it yourself.

You have to get engineers flown from the USA for repairs because there’s secret tech in it that you are not allowed to open yourself.

What a fucking piece of shit plane, I sincerely think it was created just to see who is still licking the US’ boots to this day.

South Korean pilots reportedly stated that they couldn’t activate these jets without US approval lol.

Imagine shelling out all that protection money but you still need your master’s nod to be able to use your fancy new toy.

Well, the South Korean army is nothing more than an American puppet, it does not have the clause that in the event of an armed confrontation, the command of the South Korean army is now commanded by the American army.

Oh, I’m sure the f 35 has some interesting stuff in it. If they could get it off the ground to actually use it though.

I think in the context of the post-Cold War era you can argue that they don’t have real incentive to actually put out good machinery. USA has not been in direct conflict with an opponent that can go toe to toe with them. Both Iraq and Afghanistan were outmatched. They don’t have much use for fighter jets since they are busy droning weddings. So it’s just them being complacent.

Obviously not saying that you are unaware of this or what you said wasn’t a joke. Still worth pointing out.

American government is indirectly run by weapons manufacturers through lobbying. Whatever they put out, the government will end up buying.

Part of the reason, for jets at least, is Lockheed and Boeing now effectively have monopoly on the entire military aircraft industry in the US. They pretty much out-marketing the actually good aircraft manufacturer, like Douglas (which got took over by Boeing), Vought (defunct in 2001), or Northrop (became irrelevant since 2000). Lockheed and Boeing have the benefit of having people in the right place in both the government and in the military itself, thus they have easier time securing contract for machine that are, most of the time, a gimmick.

So yeah, another one to the list of “Capitalism kill innovation”.

Lockheed and Boeing are the same thing to the aircraft industry as what EA/Activision are to the gaming industry.

Truly the iPhone of military jets

Edit: as an aside, are there similar collections of fails for other USian Wunderwaffe? Javelins, A-10s, etc?

Credit where credit due, McDonnell Douglas-made F-15 is a great design. Overrated as fuck, but still one of the greatest design of its time. They’re reasons why the F-15C is the standard when judging the performance of newer 4th generation fighter.

Then Boeing took over MD, and they butcher the design to hell.

F-104 Starfighter, C-5 FRED, SR-71…Hell, I would argue that any jet with Lockheed in its name is the iPhone of military jets.

For Tanks, you get those with Shillelagh missile systems. M551 Sheridan and M60A2 Starship came to mind.

Since you brought up Javelin. I remember reading that, in perfect training condition, the hit rate of the missile (no, not the KILL rate, the HIT rate) is less than 19%, which would be even lower in combat condition. Meanwhile, each Javelin cost about 1/5 of a fully-modernized T-72B3.

Which mean, it cost just as much to HIT a T-72B3 with a Javelin as to make a whole T-72B3, which kinda defeat the attractiveness of ATGM to begin with.

It’s still a big problem for Russian military, consider how tank-heavy their army are. All I’m saying is that it’s not a game-changer as fuck tons of western media claim it to be.

An articles from a few years ago.

Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) changed its air defense strategy in order to lower the number of interceptions. Fighter jets should now only be scrambled when foreign aircraft threaten the country’s airspace. The change was made to help free resources for the advanced training of fighter pilots on the newly-deployed Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. Coincidentally, the introduction of the stealth fighter jet lowered the capacity of the JASDF to intercept incoming aircraft. "The F-35 is not suitable for emergency lift-off, and it will become difficult to maintain the same system as before,” the Japanese Ministry of Defense told Kyodo News. Currently, the main interceptor of the JASDF is the Mitsubishi F-15J, a homegrown version of the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. However, the Japanese government is reportedly considering the sale of some of its older F-15J fighters to fund the acquisition of more F-35s, which could hinder the capacity of the JASDF even more.

If you buy American equipment, you can repress your own people and others and WaPo calls you a reformer. You are not buying the weapon, you are buying PR.

Why not? Surely American Laws don’t apply anymore once it’s in my land, right? Surely then I can just pry it open and get the brightest minds of our nation to figure out just what the hell this “Secret Tech” does.

Surely not go “KABOOM” when it finds out you pried the plane open or tinkered with it too much?

Western countries have remotely shut down machines on the car factories in Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod that were making their cars (Renault, Skoda, etc). And that’s just cars, European ones at that. I don’t even want to know how far a Yankee weapons maker would go to “protect” their junk.

You could force a chimpanzee to snort a brick of cocaine and it would build a better plane than the F-35.
