I did 8 semesters of music academically. Before that, I learned classical guitar through hired instruction

That’s awesome! Wish I could have studied music formally. I’ve heard a lot of people use music school (like art school) as a way to network early on and form a social circle with other musicians. It’s kinda lonely as a self-taught introvert musician.

I didn’t join thinking of that, but yeah, it’s a natural consequence. But there’s one thing that the academia will never teach us, which is our musical aptitude

I wanna learn guitar but i wanna master the piano first and the theory with it. I’m in my first semester of academic study for music.

Very nice. Do you have Solfege in your curriculum? I studied, among other things, solfege, harmony, counterpoint and musical analysis, all very interesting and fun subjects

Yes i do have solfege and it is kicking my ass lol I’m learning it though and practicing. I joined choir to get a better grasp of it

I’m trying to get where you are but i am also enjoying learning about the subjects, i love my courses

i took piano lessons for several years, and have been studying piano academically for a while at this point. hope you enjoy the ride!! music programs can be very exhausting sometimes, especially for performance majors

I began by trying to teach myself and then under mentorship of my best friend. I am in my first semester of academic study in music. I am learning piano i am enjoying it but I get frustrated sometimes.

i get frustrated too lol, and i’m probably a lot farther along the path than you. that’s just how learning goes, there will always be plateaus and backslides.

how do you like your teacher? if it’s your first semester, do you have a specific major or focus yet?

I try not to let the frustration get the best of me but I’m trying to mold better study and practice routines

I love my teacher she is very sweet and encouraging, and talented. She always gives me great feedback says I’m doing well just need to work on my timing better. My specific major is just music, i want to master the piano and produce. When i got the piano down i wanna go to another instrument

well, studying any instrument is a constant struggle of practicing better, ad infinitum. it’s the same way for me too, and for just about everyone. it might sound weird, but mao’s on practice actually helped me approach practicing in a much better and more effective way hahaha

it’s so great that you like your teacher, i’m glad. a good teacher really makes all the difference for sure. hope you learn a lot, piano is a good skill to have regardless of what your focus ends up being.

Would you mind recommending me or showing me which Mao excerpt you’re referring too?

But yes my instructor is incredible I just think i need to improve my approach to practice

Thank you i really appreciate it, it’s really hard to get to practice in between work, bills, and school

i’m not referring to any particular quote, just the entirety of his work called “on practice”

practicing really is a constant struggle, i have to always remind myself to turn my brain on and practice well even though i’ve been doing it for years and years. i’ll just say that good practice for 10-20 minutes a day is worth 10x more than bad practice for 4 hrs a day, hahaha

You know something it’s been a month, but because of my ADHD i just started this approach and I’m feeling much better. I wanna keep it up it’s only been a week.
