Geotechland commenting on the Linux Daily Driver Challenge from Linus Tech Tips. BTW: My comment, I recently installed Pop!_OS on my sons desktop PC that he uses for school and gaming and Steam just installed fine.

While I like that big YouTubers pushing or at least giving Linux a chance, I disagree with lots of his statements.

He said in an earlier video that as long as you need to mess with Terminal no one of his friends will switch to Linux. Not only is this incorrect since there are distros that work fully with GUI only, but also the trend is simply to code and do things quickly in PowerShell, Terminal, WSL2 and so on.

He also complained about gaming, this is not and never was a Linux problem, I think we all know that. It starts with Stores and with AMD, NVIDIA and Co. who must release their source code otherwise nothing ever will change. Linux evolved a lot regarding gaming and in most of the cases it is an NVIDIA issue and some stores are simply ignoring their own community, the GOG thread about Linux support has over 30+ votes yet we’re still waiting for it, there are workarounds to make it work but this is a bad situation to promote new games which otherwise would run perfectly fine under Linux.

I know Linus gets lots of respect in the community, but I disagree with several arguments he brings and I expected more from him doing proper research on such topics because others might get scared away even trying Linux. I think you need to understand the impact about what you say in public and how that would help or destroy a product.

There are lots of DIstros explicitly designed for gaming or Windows switcher and I do not see why Linux should be blamed when big tech like NVIDIA are the ones who refuse to work much closer together with the Linux Community. I speculate that exclusive deals with Microsoft play a big part of promoting the Windows OS.
