They forced us to invoke IP law, very communist lol.

We sent a formal email to the registrar explaining lemmygrad is our copyright and the copycat website was attempting to mimic us, which went against their TOS.

The host took it down just now but no word yet on what this means exactly. If they still have access to the domain or not.

We will follow them if they try something else with the lemmygrad name.

Anyway that’s that I think.

Or just torrent movies in general. I’ll go first: install Stremio on your device and add the Pirate Bay and Torrent.io plugins, stream everything you want for free.

        How safe is this?

        I.e. from viruses / malware?

And from getting a letter one day to say that a film studio, etc, is suing you?

Do you need to use a VPN at the same time?

It uses torrents but streams them directly to your device, so everything that applies to torrents applies here. I’ve never gotten a virus to be honest, never had a problem streaming anything. As for your ISP finding out, it’s totally possible since it’s just torrents. You might want a VPN if that’s a problem where you live.

It redirects to trumps website now which was quick on their part. It’s preferable to it being a lemmy instance but I’ll look at what we can do about it later. Ideally get the domain name revoked but Web domains is not an exact science at all, its more like magic from the year 1979,so I honestly have no idea what the registrar can even do even if they wanted to.

Very neat! Seems the registrar cut the redirect too though, so hopefully we don’t have to escalate.

And if they move to another registrar (not sure they are allowed to move the domain though), we’ll just repeat the process. It’s literally more effort for them to do this than for us – we just have to copy paste an email but they have to get the authcodes, move the domain, and set up the website again. And eventually they’ll run out of registrars.

I’m sure they’re reading us so, the paragraph above is for them 🙂

I have a suspicion the person who set up that website is the same who tried to DDoS us a few times. First piece of evidence: setting up lemmy and conducting a DDoS attack takes a bit of tech know how.

Yeah, you gotta do what you gotta do. Not bothered about having to use IP law tbh, if it worked.

Their domain redirected to donald trump’s website but it seems the registrar cut that too, as the domain now cannot resolve the SSL certificate.

So on to the next topic, a hexbear user has registered lemmygrad.net (when the .com stuff was happening) and redirects it to a hexbear community.

Right now we’re not looking at taking down lemmygrad.net and we’re not even sure we’re gonna do anything about this one, because it’s not dangerous like the .com was. I’d rather it sends people to hexbear rather than an impostor website lol.

I’d like to get an informal discussion/brainstorm going, if anyone has anything to share on this topic.

Hexbear does not have tendencies different than Lemmygrad. And they have a pretty established record of being along the same lines, so it should be safe. I saw Hexbear folks mentioning doing this so that such "fed’ “ops” things cannot be repeated again.

Copyright is granted upon creation of a work, and because lemmygrad.ml can show when it was registered, whoever registered it owns the rights to it.

Titles and names are usually not covered by copyright which is where trademarks come in, but trademarks are not registered either. In this case lemmygrad is more like a brand and we can show we’ve been using this brand since 2019, for this specific purpose (someone could make a lemmygrad drink if they wanted).

No registration was necessary but we might look at doing it if this happens again or lemmygrad grows even more famous.

I’m picturing a line of cereals. Mostly corn based with a little cartoon tank as the brand lead and a cartoon Che on his motorcycle for the maté flavoured one, and the 8th box in the variety pack is branded copium so you have one that you can give to your lib friends.
