Newegg must really be desperate to get rid of those graphics cards now that GPU mining is useless.

Sure. Ill gladly take a brand new 3080 for… 200 dollars? I may be able to swing that.

I doubt you’ll be able to get it for that cheap but I hope you do

Why do you need a 30TFLOP GPU with only 10GB of VRAM?

Because my 1080 is on the way out. Half the time it doesnt even signal out to my tv. And while I imagine a 3080 is overkill; it would be nice to have a GPU that can handle Cyber punk on high settings in 2k at 60fps and it be a trivial affair.

Right now Im lucky to run CP2077 at 1080p while it oscillates between 30 and 50 fps.

My brother has a rx 6800 that does pretty good with veloren 2K 140+ frames. doesn’t have as much flops but more VRAM and should end up being cheaper and better balanced.

My bigger issue is that my monitor is a cheaper 4k gaming TV. 😒 My consoles tend to run rather smoothly looking. Something might be an issue that MAYBE PCs arent too good at talking to tvs. 🤔

No I doubt that. But console games are more tightly optimized so you would expect less frame variance.

Optimization is a tough issue and it might not even be your hardware. Look on techpowerup to see the exact specs of your GPU.

I’m really disappointed so far. Been tracking the rx 6600 and it just hasn’t come down from $250. (I’d pay less than $100 for it)

    I’ll prob end up getting a K80.

Don’t buy a new graphics card unless you can’t afford a electricity. Or just get some gaming laptop or something on discount if u need some oompf. SBCs are worthwhile for different applications too.

I’m not going for 7nm products if I’m the one paying. 14nm pretty good. 28nm is iffy for HPC given aging archs and electricity.

Yes 28nm is a long node. It provides great value in cost and efficiency for companies who cannot afford to produce at a lower node or for products which don’t have the volume to justify buying a lower node.

But maybe 14nm will be next since China is gaining the ability to mass produce it. Moore’s Law also seems to break down pretty bad after 14nm since transistors get more expensive and of course no one can afford to make 7nm chips aside from corporations like Apple, AMD, Samsung. In a long enough time frame this may adjust with EUV being normalized.

It may happen sooner rather than later that China produces it’s first domestic EUV machines. Whatever ability China has to manufacture it’s own lithography machines will directly translate to the semiconductor security of Russia.

Xi has announced publicly their interest in promoting semiconductors with alternative materials such as carbon. (I read the second volume of Xi’s book.) I believe that this will be a very big deal eventually.

Maybe if u can get a good deal on it. Running stuff like that off of a battery is a pain. It will be better when China goes full riscv.

But I have extra ATX parts sitting around so maybe I will be tempted to build an exotic Chinese system at some time.

That doesn’t change that riscv is still generally better if you care about efficiency and cost.

x86 needs to do all sorts of crap to stay compliant and compatible. It’s done at the die level.

If you’re still interested in some video games there are always open source (FOSS) games to turn to.

Here are a few from the top of my head:

Minetest is a great one. I’ve spent way too many hours playing it. It can be similar to Minecraft, however Minetest by itself is just an engine. You have to install mods (which is relatively easy and can be done in-game) to basically make your own game. Think Garry’s Mod but with Voxel graphics.

There is also Veloren which is a FOSS Cube World clone. Though this one does require decent graphics hardware to be playable. I have a Radeon RX 560 and that game makes that card rather toasty to say the least.

Another one is 0 A.D. which is basically a FOSS clone of Age of Empires III that has been in constant development for over 20 years now I believe. Can be very addicting. Though it also requires a relatively beefy GPU. (which is understandable, because it looks really good on high settings)

Here are some probably lesser known FOSS games that are less demanding in terms of resources but can still be pretty fun imo:

        Game Genre
        SuperTux 2D Platformer
        SuperTuxKart 3D Racing game
        Warzone 2100 Real time strategy
        MegaGlest Real time strategy
        Pingus 2D Lemmings Clone
FreedroidRPG RPG in the spirit of the old Diablo or Fallout games
        Xonotic Arena style FPS
FreeCiv Strategy game in the spirit of the Civilization games
FreeCol Strategy game, clone of Sid Meier’s Colonization
FreeOrion Turn based space game, inspired by Master of Orion
        Naev Space exploration

There are probably more, but these are just some that I’m familiar with. If you’re on Linux or a BSD, just search the package repositories for “game” and see what comes up. That’s how I found a lot of these.

I have been playing Veloren with my family. Thankfully my brother actually likes it and seems to be playing it instead of the old Cube World exe from a youtube video.

My 960M 2016 gaming laptop cannot really handle it and the graphics are pretty alright so that’s some reference.

I just don’t feel comfortable with rendering on a nicer display with some non-adequate graphics card. My 960M cannot hit 1080p 60fps on games I actually tend to play and be interested in like modded Minecraft and Veloren. The displays I am looking at these days are 1440p 10bit 165hz gaming monitors and 4K 120hz OLEDs.

Newer x86 CPUs are just not a great value unless you need something specific like PCIe 4 or lowest possible power consumption (but then you may not want an x86 system). I’m rocking 14nm CPUs and single threaded performance is massively overrated that AMD still seems to dump transistors on.

But you’re prob not going to get over 4TFLOPS on a 28nm GPU. And eventually I will prob need to buy a 7nm GPU even if it is to just forward frames to it’s HDMI 2.1 port.

6700 is a pretty balanced card. You’d be good to get it for $200 or less in the post mining market.

When the volumes from the miners start coming in u might get it.

Or if u see a listing locally with out much competition you may be lucky…

Chances are you will just have to wait for them to depreciate as it goes for electronics.
