The local reports on his death made me sick. I can’t believe anyone could paint that man as someone who deserves any amount of respect. It’s all “he ended the Cold War” but never “he let his country’s children to be raped and his elderly to starve”.
The public funded media of my country said he ended the “Dictatorial Communist Empire”. They turned his death into an opportunity to spread rabid anti-Communist propaganda. Something funny is that the corporate media only shows the opinion of white Western leaders.
Because the people who actually experienced communism have far too fond opinions of it that goes against their narrative.
“Socialism or barbarism” indeed
Gorbachev and the Soviet “reformers” believed that only by ending the Cold War and liquidating centralized economic planning would U.S. imperialism accept the Soviet Union’s entry into the rapidly accelerating model of a global economy.
This prove, more than anything, that they were idiots. If only they read (or comprehend) Lenin they would know that their “entry” into that global economy was only as a field for plunder, and if they did the same for Marx they would know that this economy is only accelerating towards crisis as it always was. If anything, without plundering the former socialist countries the crisis in capitalism would come way earlier.
That is, with maximum benefit of a doubt. I more suspect that they just decided they want to take part in that looting.
