There’s fighting going on in the city that started after Shia militas stormed the Green Zone and the presidential palace. Combat footage is all over twitter right now, talks of civil war is coming up, neighbors are closing their borders, but honestly I don’t really get what’s going on. Pro-Iran vs Anti-Iran militias and interests are playing a role from what I’ve gathered, but that’s about it.

Anyone more familiar with Iraq and today’s events?

A Shiite pro-Iranian anti-US politician (Muqtada al-Sadr) I’m not familiar with posted on social media that he is retiring from politics and dissolving his movement. Why he’s doing this I don’t know.

He was an opposition leader and has been involved in talks to form a new government before. Presumably his supporters took his resignation as either forced by external forces or as a sign of how screwed up the government is.

Al Jazeera is reporting that he has announced that he’s going on a hunger strike “until all violence ends”. I don’t know if that means he is chastising his supporters (the western media took it as this) or if he means something else.

Sadr is anti-Iranian. Maliki is pro Iranian.

Thanks for the correction. As I said I’m not really familiar with him. Al Jazeera described him as pro-Iranian (or maybe I misunderstood). Regardless, I corrected my post.

Hopefully another Saigon/Kabul moment for the US. Time for the occupation to be kicked out.

I’m not too familiar with the politics involved, so this comment is so I can keep up.
