As suggested here, this is a thread for Korean language learners to share ressources, experiences, or ask questions.

I’m not sure how much activity this thread will get; if this thread sees more activity, I will adjust the frequency to be bi-weekly or weekly.

Crossposting on this thread. My favourite Infographic on how to read Korean text (Hangul). It’s shockingly easy especially compared to Chinese and Japanese.

Lately I have been watching this channel called Sovereignty Broadcast (주권방송). I would say the content is intermediate-advanced level as it is mostly discussions of political topics.

I have been trying to watch this series particularly: 박한식 교수와 함께 선을 넘다 “Crossing the Line with Prof. Pak Han-sik.” They seem to usually be discussing multipolarity and how it affects Korea, as well as discussing contradictions of U.S. policy. (Some video titles: “Racism crimes on the rise in U.S., if it goes on like this, it will collapse inside”, “Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan designed to demonize China”, “U.S. Policy to collapse Cuba will fail”).

About the professor: Wikipedia, Tongil News

I also noticed they have this playlist, Intro to North Korean Studies (팟 북한학개론). I haven’t watched it though so I don’t know what the content of it is like.

I’m going to a class in about 4 hours held by the local Korean church in my area. If anyone is interested I will post an update of how it went!

edit: It went well. Only one other adult learner in my class. Was kind of awkward when asked why we were learning Korean and he said he liked the culture music and shows, and I said that “tensions are obviously rising with the north and south and the U.S. and I want to do everything I can to promote peace between the nations and fulfill whatever role I can as an American in aiding with peaceful reunification in the future, and I don’t feel like I can claim to truly know anything without understanding the language first”. Got some gapes and “wows” at that statement, but I think they just didn’t expect someone with (even limited) knowledge of actual Korean politics and history to be showing out at their beginner adult class lol. Mostly went over pronunciation and they were impressed w/ both of us, rehashed the alphabet but sped thru it as we both have studied it extensively. Next week we’ll begin with vocab. Very excited. My only real current hangup currently is on proper pronunciation of 으 as there’s not a real easy cognate in English pronunciation. Also discussed cultural differences, like not using first names, etc. It’s rude to ask a person their age in Amerika but it’s basically a must when speaking with Koreans so you don’t wind up being disrespectful to an elder, stuff like that.

Cool! I’ve been learning on and off for about 6 years now (oof has it really been that long) and forever stuck on lower intermediate level… Would love to hear about the experiences of other comrades on here!

I’m also a long time learner hovering around an intermediate plateau. Earlier this year I started following the refold method (loosely, because I was not an absolute beginner) and it helped me stay focused and make some progress after a long time where I felt like I hadn’t progressed at all. Intermediate is a really difficult level motivation-wise because your sense of progress becomes very slowed. Hopefully we can keep our motivation and keep progressing!

    Hello everyone :)

Lately I haven’t studied Korean as much as usual, but I have been spending a lot of time learning about Korean history. I do get some language practice when reading old documents or looking at history articles in Korean, though. I am also interested in the present-day unification/peace movement, so I am really motivated by that to try and improve my level.

Unfortunately I have a hard time getting into a lot of the things that seem to motivate many people to study Korean, so I haven’t participated much in learning communities before.

I haven’t taken any tests to rate my level of Korean, so I’m not sure how to quantify it.

Hmm, what else? Here’s some songs I like:

    사계

    일요일이 다 가는 소리

    들어라 양키야

    꽃병을 만든다

This first song has been haunting me since yesterday, wow. It’s eerie how the music somehow exactly resembles a sewing machine

Thanks! I tried taking it just now, but at the end it never loaded my results, unfortunately. Maybe I’ll try again later, or try a different test.

I hope everyone’s studies are going well!

Some words I learned this week:

    상대방 - the other party/side, one’s counterpart, one’s adversary

한꺼번에 - all at once, at the same time, all together

    침탈 - pillage, plunder

I also found this playlist of lectures about South Korea’s recent history:

    21세기 한국현대사

It begins with the IMF crisis in 1997.

    How is everyone’s study going?

I didn’t end up studying much this week so far. Hoping to get back to studying after today.

I just uploaded some of the new PSA posters and their (Papago) translations

Nice. I was thinking about posting some articles I was reading with a translation (either machine or my own), wasn’t sure if that would be well-received or not but maybe I will do that after all.

Was also wondering if any of us who are learning Korean might want to work together on translating and article or something, as both a study method and a way of producing something. Not sure whether people would want to do that or not.
