I think we all would rather look like Xi than Mao. This video is a good deep dive on the available options for preventing and even regrowing hair. The host of the video is actually all about broscience with steroid and supplement chemistry but he is pretty knowledgeable.

I don’t know if I would call this “health” but I think it is worth sharing and this is the best sub I could think of. According to a friend of mine this stuff actually works. I don’t do any of this stuff yet, but I may decide to if I start thinning more than I am happy with.

Edit: If you don’t want to watch it here are my takeaways after watching that plus a couple other vids.

  1. Finasteride halts hair loss

  2. dermaneedling + minoxidil stimulates hair growth.

From what I can tell these are safe options (part 2 in particular) but there is some question surrounding Finasteride’s side effects and whether or not it causes prostate cancer. The medical studies I found seem to indicate that it actually decreases the likelihood of developing prostate cancer but may increase the risk of a more agressive form of prostate cancer but I actually think that may be pretty minimal based on this study .

Excerpt from this research paper: In May 2008, a re-analysis of the PCPT results showed a significant decrease of 30% in the overall risk of prostate cancer in the finasteride group vs the placebo group, but it also found a statistically non-significant and less important increase of the prevalence of high-grade cancers in the finasteride group.

Overall I don’t love the idea of introducing a non-zero risk of prostate cancer into my life, and I don’t know how much I care about losing my hair… It does kind of seem like finasteride is a magic “no lose hair pill” though.

Sorry to be off topic but man, I can’t with those fitness youtubers anymore. Cause they all have their opinions about trans people in sports that nobody asked them for! “Yes, I, the white cis man, have an opinion about this topic I have not researched. Listen to me”.

The only guy I watch is Shredded Sports Science because he’s a scientist and even then I dread the day he will say some dumb shit (I think he might have already actually)

Totally agree. I didn’t know this guy had done that. My friend just sent this to me a while ago and I have been sitting on it if I decide to do anything about my hairline.

The only guy who I have had zero problem with so far is Jonni Shreve he’s open about his drug use, open about how his friends helped him start his fitness career, he literally cried on camera while talking about how his father had alzheimers but he used to hate his fathre and generally is not a macho prick. And as far as I can tell has not talked about anything related to trans people in any way whatsoever. In fact he seems way less reactionary than your average fitness youtuber. And he gives great advice on form.

It’s actually a lot like comedians- they ALL have their TERF or anti-china or some other ham fucking fisted propaganda script. Either I became more aware of the way our society uses comedy to marginalize people or they have gotten worse in the last 4-5 years. Maybe a bit of both.

MPMD is famous for being “level-headed” as far as fitness influencers go (there’s a small niche of them that reject the over-the-top or downright stupid instagram influencer sphere so they all know each other). He’s also known for being open about his steroid use.

Let that sink in. The guy who would not be allowed to compete in normal circumstances has an opinion about keeping trans people out of pro sports.

I didn’t even watch his entire video but it’s the first result if you google “More plates more dates trans athletes”.

pretty much. The thing that gets me is that when you have a one on one discussion about transgender people irl people don’t really have a strong opinion on sports, and almost everyone I’ve talked to takes a live and let live stance (and I live in a red rural af state). and when you canvas the whole internet there is way less controversy about lgbt issues than in certain hotspot sites -youtube, reddit, etc.

I am not sure about the methodology but this site seems pretty on point about a lot of things and this is what it shows about “transgender”. I personally think that the social media is deliberately targeting the young white men of the world. The suburban bro to fascist pipeline is real and deliberate and includes peterson, rogan, musk, etc. And it is centered on youtube and reddit imo.

Maybe I am not talking to enough people about it, and I have NO lived experience with this, so idk. I just think a lot of this sentiment is astroturfed and being turned into a wedge issue by the right just like abortion was in the 80s.

I work from home and have been seriously working out for 2 years now. A few years back, I imagined myself going to the gym, becoming shredded, and then starting a youtube channel to promote healthy masculinity and generally a “progressive” (marxist) and positive message.

I would be closer to that dream now than 4 years ago but truthfully, with the way things are on youtube and who and what fitness is associated with, I’m not so sure I want to put myself out there any more.

My response to “what do you think of trans women in sports” would have been “I’m a cis white dude and so are you, neither of us competes so our opinions literally don’t matter on this subject”

Maybe I am not talking to enough people about it, and I have NO lived experience with this, so idk. I just think a lot of this sentiment is astroturfed and being turned into a wedge issue by the right just like abortion was in the 80s.

Yeah, I mean, they’re the ones always raving about it, keeping the topic alive and keeping change from happening as well. If those influencers (Rogan, Rowling, Peterson etc) stopped talking about it you’d probably see a very quick change on Internet discourse. People would move on. I have to imagine it takes a lot of energy to stay mad over a matter they clearly misunderstand so badly.

I am in a similar situation and I have even had some similar thoughts (I would subscribe for sure - I get so tired of seeing sexism or homophobia masquerading as “positivity”). Fascists loves to adopt fitness as part of their aesthetic.

It literally only comes up when the people I am speaking with bring it up and it often only takes me 2 sentences to help them realize it is (1) hypocritical as fuck for them to have a strong negative stance on it, and (2) none of their business. Like my neighbor brought it up and all I said was “that’s a mean thing to say” and they looked really ashamed and that was actually enough to get through to them. My neighbors generally respect me so that helps but honestly just a little bit of pushback can go a long way on these things.

This is exactly it : “People would move on” that is what the whole point of the right though. Sow discontent to distract people from taking action against the actual problem of capitalism. the anti-LGBTQ sentiment is literally from the nazi playbook.

I’ve randomly seen this video on this topic and it may be informative.

It tries to go over some models for why hair loss occurs, and some interventions that may be accessible to most people. Don’t know if it’s trustworthy (the topic is of no real interest to me), but you may want to check it for some clues.

I’m already burnt out on caring about this lol. Like on one hand I don’t want to be dismissive of people who care a lot as it can affect mental health but on the other, we have bigger fish to fry.

The main intervention the video brings up is…scalp massage, providing some evidence for why it may be effective. Assuming it works, it should be a more sensible solution due to a lack of side effects. I don’t think people should lose their hope of recovering from this condition.

(The reason I can’t be bothered to research the topic thoroughly (sorry) is because I have very little risk of developing male pattern baldness myself)

No problem at all, I also kind of think it can look good in a way, like part of the person’s character. Aging is natural.

finasteride gave me severe depression after half a year of use at .25x the regular recommended dose lol. I went on and off a few times just to make sure it was actually that

also even more common than that apparently is erectile dysfunction and watery cum though I never got

minoxidil also bloated my face to ridiculous amounts due to the water retention. I’m talking like from pointed sharp jawline to round fat face

I do minoxidil and get it from Costco for fairly cheap. It made a fairly noticeable difference. It honestly is getting old though and I think I’m just going to give in and let nature takes it’s course. I think the biggest issue is I just have to accept the hair and body I was born with.

I’ll just grow a big bushy beard and become a Karl Marx impersonation. I definitely have the ability to grow the facial hair for it. Although I’m more of a “widows peak” type on the top. I’d have to shave it back in the middle some to do a true Marx look. Funny enough I have a friend who could very take on a Lenin immersion with his facial shape but the asshole has amazing hair genetics.

I feel kind of the same wrt just letting nature take it’s course. I am a handsome enough guy and my grandma always said that aging with grace isn’t for the faint of heart but it is the most dignified way to go. Like I don’t think it is purely vanity to want a nice hairline but I do think that some people can get obsessed in a kind of cringey way. Like my friend said “it’s just hair” lmao. However I did still want to share as I know some of our comrades may feel differently wrt “it’s just hair” (and I’m still undecided) and this guy is a good resource.

Yeah, I agree that like, I would love to NOT go bald. Lmao. But it’s a loosing battle and I feel… Idk. Tired? I think it’s maybe just life in general too but like, I’m getting tired of having one more thing to worry about. With I could just get plugs from the back or side of my head since those bits are thick as can be. Meanwhile my front side trying to go full on Vegeta impersonation. Like how did that shit even evolve? I want to know the evolutionary advantage of loosing your hair. lol.
