“They pick the lock, they dump the whole can on the street and then as the sort through the things they want while the garbage is either on the sidewalk or out on the street,” said Public Works Acting Director Alaric Degrafinried.

Yo Alaric, just thinking out loud here but it’s almost as if material conditions for many under capitalism are so bad that they feel compelled to go digging through the rubbish of others in hope of finding food or sellable goods.

Here in Portland we have the opposite. The trash cans downtown let you put in cans so they can be easily removed. Unfortunately people still dump out the trash sometimes when they are searching for cans, but I much prefer our way. And of course bigger picture it is awful that anyone is reduced to that level of existence.

      Hello fellow Portlander waves

Yeah… downtown can be a fucking mess… piles of trash in many places & emptied trashcans…

I think the city should install trashcans that drop into a pit which can be removed from the ground with a dump-truck of sorts (that should solve the looking for cans & massive mess issue) and setup a bottle drop next to every bin with easily removable back so people can get the cans they need for redemption.
