Is this good or bad and why?
I think that removing profit motive from education is unequivocally good. When profit is the driving motive then you end up with a lot of scam services that don’t necessarily provide proper education because the goal is to make money spending as little effort as possible. And even when these services work as advertised having to pay creates a barrier making them inaccessible to those who can’t afford them. Privatization of education in US has been an utter disaster.
I had a friend that worked as a telemarketer for one of those for-profit scammy universities. They’re awful institutions that shouldn’t exist.
Oh, cool, I guess I’ve just never interacted with something like this or maybe the situation isn’t as bad where I live so I didn’t even know what an academic tutor is.
I’d imagine that this both crashes the amount of tutors and tutoring available and makes most of the remaining ones still take payment but just don’t declare it anywhere. But it is worrisome if this sort of tutoring is considered vital for succeeding.
